Six times more newly homeless families than new social houses

New figures released yesterday reveal that the amount of newly homeless families in England far outweighs the number of newly built social homes by six to one. Analysis for these statistics was completed by the National Housing Federation.

In 2022-23, 8,386 new social homes were built in England whilst 53,800 households were accepted by households as requiring help as they were either experiencing or at risk of homelessness.

Just recently, Liverpool City Council leader Liam Robinson has written to the government asking for urgent help over the city’s rise in homelessness. The letter expressed his concern that the cost of providing accommodation had risen out of control from £250,000 to £19m in just three years.

Data released earlier this year detailed that 1,078 people in Liverpool were homeless on any given night in 2022.
