Lone parents at a higher risk of eviction, says housing charity

According to a survey done by housing charity Shelter, over 70,000 lone-parent households are facing eviction this winter. This means that one in seven lone parents who privately rent are facing homelessness within weeks.

The charity found that one-parent families were more likely to fall behind on rent and/or face ‘no-fault evictions’. The one in seven that have been threatened with losing their home this winter is larger than the one in ten in the wider population of private renters in England.

The government’s plan to abolish Section 21 (no-fault evictions) is included in the Renters Reform Bill which is going through parliament, whilst the number of private landlords seeking to evict tenants through the courts has risen to a seven-year high.
