Big Help Project stands in solidarity with Afghan refugees

We are deeply saddened to witness the escalating crisis in Afghanistan. The people of Afghanistan are uprooting their entire lives to make dangerous journeys in a desperate attempt to flee from the ongoing violent conflicts that have ripped through their country. It is extremely difficult to watch, but for those trapped and denied their rights and their freedoms they are doing more than just bearing witness to the unimaginable: they are living it every day, knowing that their chances of escape diminish with each hour that passes, and with full knowledge of what it means if they are not able to get out in time. For those who have been airlifted out, their ordeal is far from over: images of Afghan refugees attempting to make safe passage to Kabul airport has been shared all over the media, as men, women and children flee their homes. For those arriving in new countries-people who are traumatised by displacement, with no resources to fall back on other than the compassion of the nations’ granting them refuge- this is a precarious time: now, more than ever, the Big Help Project and other organisations need to stand together and act quickly to support those enduring the devastation happening in Afghanistan.

Peter Mitchell, Executive Chair of the Big Help Project, said: “The Big Help Project is founded upon the principles of never passing by a person in need, and in that spirit we will continue to do what we do best: help those suffering in crisis, without judgement or reservation. The Big Help Project is in dialogue with Liverpool City Council regarding the providing of housing for Afghan refugees. We are also committed to supporting refugees with practical help beyond the immediate need for safe, suitable and secure housing, by providing food, clothing, and everything in between for people who have been left with nothing. We are asking all who can to support us with donations of items, and those who cannot to help us by spreading the word about our appeal, so that we can give the refugees who arrive in Merseyside the warm welcome and compassionate care that we are famous for, and which they so desperately need and deserve.”

The Big Help is proud to stand in solidarity with all refugees fleeing conflict and is committed to working with all local and national organisations to provide support during this ongoing humanitarian crisis.
