10 years of Big Help Project - Baby Basics

It’s the third week of our #TBT series, where we look back at the history of the Big Help Project to celebrate our 10-year anniversary. This week we’re taking a look back at Baby Basics.

Big Help Project set up the Knowsley branch of Baby Basics in 2014 as part of a national scheme based in Sheffield. Baby Basics aims to support new mothers and families who are struggling financially and practically to look after a new born. There was a growing need for practical help for new mothers, basic essentials needed to look after new-borns can be financially daunting and many people were struggling. Since joining Baby Basics and starting the Knowsley branch, it has grown from strength to strength. We help to provide all the essentials and equipment to families with a new baby from 0-3 months. Referrals come to us by health-care professionals, such as midwives, who work closely with mums-to-be; we have supported and referred vulnerable mums-to-be fleeing from domestic violence, seeking asylum and homelessness into our support services to ensure themselves and their baby get the best care possible.

The provision of essential baby supplies; such as Moses baskets, baby clothes, toiletries and essential baby equipment, not only helps new mums prepare for the arrival of a new-born, but also empowers them to stand independently. By providing the essentials a new mum would need, and giving them the support, they may require – it allows them to take a step in taking back control in her life as she begins her journey with a new baby. Every item given away through Baby Basics is generously donated by someone in the community, each and every package is then wrapped with a high level of care and love; we want every mother and child to feel the value of each gift and know that they do not have to go through their journey alone. We don’t forget Mum by adding in a gift and a card for her!
